Species of Spaces 1974 – An Accommodation of Retained and Forgotten Locations

Species of Spaces by Georges Perec is a constellation of texts that probe into different spaces. Of central concern is the order and system in which the texts are organised: from a book page to a bedroom, via a state with territorial borders to finally include outer space. This inventory, as well as 1974, the year of the publication of the book, is the theme of the project Species of Spaces 1974 – An Accommodation of Retained and Forgotten Locations. The project, initiated by Cecilia Darle and Kristina Bength, is unfolding in an exhibition and in this book, to which the nine artists contribute with an essay. The group’s point of departure is the writings of Perec, in which limitations and rules become a working method, hinting at an autobiographical latency. Filtered through memory’s associative thought processes, they describe spaces that are both fictitious and mythical and very real, in which the past is mirrored in the present, and vice versa.
