Huussi – Imagining the future history of sanitation – Death to the flushing toilet

The Pavillion of Finland’s exhibition at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia declares death to the flushing toilet as we know it.

Finland’s exhibition aims to raise awareness and create dialogue about the importance of reinventing sanitation infrastructure to serve the world as it is today, not a century ago. Freshwater scarcity and the overuse of chemical fertilisers are at the centre of urgent, global economic and ecological challenges that include water and food security, climate change and ecosystem collapse.

A Finnish Huussi – a composting toilet familiar to many Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian people through its use in rural settings and holiday homes, has been installed in the center of the pavillion.
With the help of time travel in video works,  the exhibition present the absurdity of our current use of water fertilisers.

Water is needed to grow food and keep ecosystem thriving, not to flush down toilets.

The book – Death to he flushing toilet, is published in conjunction with The Dry Collective’s exhibition Huussi – Imagining the future history o sanitation, commissions by Archinfo for the Pavillion of Finland at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
