Fresh – The Irresistible Appeal of Gert Wingårdh’s Architecture

Wingårdhs represents an eclectic and pioneering architecture. Their projects are a testament to a wide array of architectural expressions, while remaining deeply rooted in a pragmatic and humanistic Nordic tradition. “Our buildings are based on responsiveness. It’s a different approach, a unique approach,” says Gert Wingårdh. This book presents a selection of the bureau’s latest works, such as Sven-Harry’s (Art Museum), Spira, K:fem, Victoria Tower, Kuggen and Emporia, as well as essays by Gert Wingårdh and editor Tomas Lauri, and an in-depth conversation between Gert Wingårdh and Bjarke Ingels of Denmark’s BIG Architects.

“Gert Wingårdh is pursuing something that isn’t necessarily what he has always done and now is trying to do 100 percent. What comes across in this book is that if he decides to do a project that is about burnt wood, he explores everything about burnt wood. And if a project is about colour, he explores everything possible to do with colour. Or clearcoated brass. Or straw roofs. And so on.” – Bjarke Ingels

“It is architecture that makes room for time.” – A+U, 2013:04

“Wingårdh has stolen a march on this scene, upping the ante for the sustainable architecture community to reinterpret such essentially medieval materials for the twenty-first century.” – Olivier Lowenstein, Detail 01/2013

“With a curvy, eye-catching façade, brightly-coloured spaces and a gigantic roof park, Emporia breaks shopping mall taboos.” – Terri Peters, Frame July/August 2013
