How does the design business present itself to those who work within it? A group of designers decided to answer that question. Through surveys, interviews, statistics, focus groups and workshops, an image started to appear; an image of a business industry marked by gender division, rectification and an oblivious power elite. Gender, ethnicity, age and class are sensitive topics in the fractions of the business that were looked in to – such as product design, industrial design, textile design and furniture design.
Omforma – Nya strukturer för designbranschen addresses designers, politicians, design companies, organisations and institutions working with design – but also anyone interested to know about how power structures can affect a small-scale industry. We are surrounded by design on a daily basis, and those who take up space and are given space within its framework has an impact on our lives.
